Hot Dog Cart Umbrella – Wind Solution Update

Picture 3

A few weeks ago I ran a story about dealing with windy conditions at your hot dog cart. Joe sent me pics of his solution. Check it out…

*********************

I took these pictures Friday with winds reported up to 46 MPH by the Topeka Weather station. These pictures show how I keep the umbrella from tearing up. I purchased tarp clamps and bungee cords from Harbor Freight. The wind was so strong it blew my cart backwards with the front tire locked. I than had to block the wheels. My dad told me if I have a problem find a solution.

Thanks again,
Joe

The best solutions are usually the simplest. Thanks for the pictures Joe!

Check out this innovation – pure genius Angie!

Steve,

Greetings from Oregon. Here is the cart that I built this year.

I bought  your “E-Z Built Hot Dog Cart” package and the video and plans were easy to follow. I added a trickle charger for the battery. The grill mount  is on hinges and enables the grill to ride above the cart while not in use. I even found a stainless steel sink.

I have an agreement with the school district in my city to provide concessions for the little league. I am keeping the menu simple. Dog and sausage, chili, and kraut, cheese, onions, relish, and mustard.

I have been unemployed since December. Over these few months, I bought supplies as needed for each part of the project. The cart is free of debt.

Self employment is the greatest gift I could have given Continue reading “Angie’s Swivel Grill Hot Dog Cart.”

Hot Dog Cart On Military Base – A Family Affair

Kids hot dog cart on military base

Kids start a hot dog cart on military base.  This is quite possibly the most all-American story you will read this year.  I love this country and the people who make it great! People like John and his family, who sent me this…

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi Steve,

We would just like to start by saying thank you for producing your awesome DVD video’s. The kids were anxious after I showed them your stuff and convinced me and their mother to order them. The DVD videos arrived and the boys were excited and ready to start building as soon as they came in the mail.

It took the kids (Wade 18, Kalib 16), wife and I about a month to build and we pretty much did it over the winter.

Now for the business end of it. I am active duty Military and we live on a military base, we discussed the kids business plans with friends and family to get input on where the kids should try to set up their cart once it was built and passed inspection. The question came up of why not try to set up the hot dog cart on military base?

Why not, so the kids set up an appointment to meet with the local AAFEES Manager (on Base Military Shopping Center) here at the base to see what would be required. The manager loved the idea and the cart and asked the kids when could they start. The manager reviewed with my sons and wife what was required to operate a hot dog cart on military base.

They started 2 weeks after the meeting with the manager. They now work the weekends, with the cart being setup in between the 2 main entrances to the shopping center.

The manager informed them just this last week they will be able to operate during the week when schools out for the summer. The kids also did some research and are now also serving shaved ice too!

Menu:
Hot Dogs/chili dogs with hot Sauerkraut
Nachos
Chips
Soda
Hawaiian Shaved Ice

The boys added a small PA system so they can plug in their Ipod (They have to play the music that I will allow) and bark in the customers, also added a Oogah horn for the small kids and their parents to honk when they buy something….LOL it draws more attention to them and they are the talk of the base.

Talk to you soon! Cheers

John, Heidi and the Boyz

The Daily Dawg Hot Dog Cart – Opening Day Pictures

Another success story in the making, Rick and Diane are open for business with their E-Z Built Hot Dog Cart…

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to let you know that it has been very exciting to build this hotdog cart and stretch my entrepreneur brain. I worked with the local SBDC here in Loveland Colorado and did all the work for a business plan.

Picture 3So I got the hot dawg slinging business underway at a local brewhouse called Grimm Brothers Tap Room Friday and Saturday.

It was a soft start which was good for me.  We sold 200 hot dawgs for the weekend. Even had a few come back just to eat another one, good feeling.

They said they would like for me to be their every weekend so i feel pretty loyal to them for helping me get a start, and nothing goes better than a great beer and a Chicago hot dawg.

Steve here are some pics from opening day use the ones you want. I named the business The Daily Dawg and we are the Hot Dawg Slingers

Steve, thank you so much for all you do and the investment was so well worth it!

Excited to keep moving forward,

Rick & Diane Janecka

How To Display Your Menu On Your Hot Dog Cart

Picture 4

Larry suggested a good back-to-basics topic for today’s discussion. He writes:

Hello Steve. I just finished reading the current issue of hot dog cart news.  I’m gearing up for my first real season (I didn’t get started until mid August last year) and I am implementing some changes to my menu.

I had printed my menus on standard 8 1/2 x 11 computer paper (full color), put them into plastic sheet protectors and attached them to my cart using the wide, clear shipping tape. Now that I wanted to make some menu/price changes it was a total pain to remove the menus from the sides of the cart. What does everybody else do as far as as Continue reading “How To Display Your Menu On Your Hot Dog Cart”

Hot Dog Cart Umbrellas And Dealing With The Wind

windumbrella

What do you do when the wind is threatening to turn your umbrella inside out?

George asks…

Steve,
I have been up and running for 6 straight weekends.  I am just selling on Saturday and Sundays.  Things have been going well.  The question I have is about wind.  The place I am set up at is in a pretty open area and it pretty much always has a breeze to being very windy.  This last weekend, the wind was blowing about 15-25 mph, which is pretty common.  The problem is my umbrella, it has been able to handle it most of the time, but this weekend it just couldn’t handle some of the strong gusts of wind and it broke.  I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues with wind and figured out a way to strengthen their umbrella or thought of a way to deal with wind, other than to close the umbrella, or to shut down.  The reason I cannot just close the umbrella is that it is so sunny, I would have to shut down because the sun makes it unbearable.  Having an umbrella is a must.

Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks,
George Huntoon

I hate closing my umbrella when it’s too windy. Here is a great solution:

https://hotdogprofits.com/blog/hot-dog-cart-umbrella-wind-solution-update/

George also told me he is using an 8′ umbrella. If he drops down to a 6′ umbrella, the wind has a whopping 44 percent less surface area to grab – and that makes a
