Hot Dogs Down Under

Hi to all the slingers, all over the world, from the Hot Dog King, down under, in Australia.

My name is Steve, which seems to be a good thing in this place. I live just outside of Sydney, Australia. Its about 30 miles (50 kilometres) from the landmarks, like the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Aussies haven’t been educated in the world of hot dogs like Americans, in particular. Steve’s reference to “the shrivelled green weenie” would be a high point to many Aussies. Our buns are way too big, so the ratio of sausage to bread is all wrong.

All my life, I wondered why Americans loved hot dogs and Australians did not. I have not visited America yet but look forward to the “Trip of Discovery” in the not too distant future. For many years I had the vision of a 1950’s diner style, complete with jukebox, selling hot dogs and milkshakes called “Hot Dog Heaven”. I was lucky not to be locked up when I told Australians of my dream. I learned to keep my mouth shut, until now. (PS. If you take my idea and run with it, Steve has my address for the royalty checks!)

To satisfy my Hot Dog dream, I searched the internet and found two important things. Steve’s Hot Dog Profits and a company in China that builds Hot Dog carts. I bought Hot Dog Profits. I read and I listened and learned so much. I bought a hot dog cart from China. When the Hot Dog cart arrived, it was in a packing crate and needed some assembly.  I wasn’t over the moon with the build quality of the chassis (trailer bits) and indeed it broke before we got the cart home. The cooking body was pretty good and looked great so the decision was made to get it mounted on a custom built chssis. One thousand Dollars later, my girlfriend is giving me even stranger looks than before and wondered about my sanity, once again.

Now, we have a trailer. While waiting for the trailer to be built, shipped and rebuilt, I have been trying all the hot dogs and buns on the market but haven’t found anything that really excites the taste buds. Then, Sydney’s very first Costco opened. Went to have a look along with 3 million other people and while waiting to get in, had a hot dog. All this talk about getting supplies from Sam’s and Costco made sense now. This was a hot dog like no other. NOW I understood why Americans get excited about Hot Dogs. Now we have a product to put our name to.

Hot Dog King is the home of “The Great American Hot Dog.”

The response to “our” product has been amazing. We have sold The Great American Hot Dog to American tourists and they agree that it is a great American Hot Dog. I think our advantage over Costco is that we cook with love and pride.

Some things of interest.

We sell the Great American Hot Dog for $5.00. This compares to a Big Mac here in Australia at $5.45

We sell drinks (regular cans) for $2.50. Some other vendors (not Hot Dog) are selling cans for $3. About the best we can buy them for is 65 cents per can for Coke products and 50 cents for Pepsi brands. Water we buy for 35 cents.

Packets of chips here wholesale for just under $1.

The package looks like this – 1 Great Dog, chips and drink for $7.50.

Hot Dogging in a Recession

Steve,

Many years ago before I ever considered getting into the Hot Dog business I heard this story that made an impression on me.  I just found it again on the internet and thought I’d share it with the rest of the gang. Enjoy!

-Dave Barkley

HOT DOG STORY

There was once a man who did not have any formal business training in accounting, engineering, law or medicine so he did what most people do in those circumstances, he went into sales.

He opened a little stand on the corner and yelled out “Hot Dog” and what do you think happened to his business? It grew.

So he got a bigger griddle, put up a sign that said “Hot Dog”, did some advertising and his business boomed so much, that he was able to put his oldest boy through college.

His oldest boy came back with a degree in marketing and obviously knew everything there was to know about how to run a business. He told his dad there was a recession going on and that he had better change the way he did business: re-engineer, cut back.

So the dad was scared his son knew it all, so he cut out his advertising, then he took down his “Hot Dog” sign, then reduced the sized of his griddle and even stopped yelling “Hot Dog”.

He went home one day very dejected and his son asked, “What is the matter Dad?” The dad said, “You’re right, there is a recession going on out there and it hit my business awful hard.”

Point: Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Great story with a great lesson.

Thanks Dave!

Menus For Hot Dog Carts

Hi Steve,

Check out these menus I had made from one of your 50 cool hot dog cart menu templates. I have a friend who works in the mail room of my former employer (yeah…the one who laid me off) for a contract printing company and he cranked these out for me on a plotter and laminated them as well.

You’ll notice that I left off the prices because I can write on the laminated surface with erasable markers. That works out great when I’m going from event to event and adjusting the prices.

I used the ‘surfer’ template because that goes along with my business theme.

I had him make 2 signs because I don’t currently take credit cards but may start pretty soon so I have a sign that suits cash or credit both.

The price to make these signs…An original Italian Combo from Jersey Mike’s.

Don’t know if you’ve ever had a Jersey Mike’s sub but if you have one in town you GOTTA try one. They have locations all over the country and originated on the Jersey Shore in 1956.

I’m off to Home Depot to pick up some 1/4″ mounting board to attach the sign to so that I can lean it against my cart like the one I have now.

I will have to retire my 3 1/2 year old sign which has weathered rain, snow and wind and is getting a little tired…lol

Later…

I love your menus Bob, they came out great. I also love your idea to laminate them so you can easily change your prices. Brilliant!

I also see that you are using the free website that my marketing team built for you. Between the website and the menus you are really developing a brand.  That’s one of the keys to being “memorable” which is directly related to the amount of repeat business you get.

Great job Bob!

P.S. If anyone wants a free website for their hot dog biz just contact me and let me know. We’re still giving them away.

Front Hot Dog Cart Wheel Dragging While Towing? Here’s The Fix.

The E-Z Built Hot Dog Cart is light enough to tow with the smallest of cars. I tow mine with my trusty four door Oldmobile and it tows great except for one problem.

The front caster wheel must be removed because my car is so low. If I don’t take it off the wheel contacts the street when I go over bumps.

So I devised a removable front wheel mount that works great. But thanks to Hot Dog Profits Premium Member Chris (Scoob) Tackett, I will be leaving my front wheel on from now on.

Hey Steve,

Once again keeping you in the loop. I got my E-Z Built Hot Dog Cart approved today for state and city and am waiting on my state license to come in the mail!

I still have a few things to do today. The building inspectors giving me a little bit of hassle. Seems that everyone I deal with has never dealt with anything like a hot dog cart before.

No worries at this point though. I WILL make it. Still waiting on the stickers to be done and a couple small things.

I read an article that you put out about the front wheel dragging the ground when placed on the hitch. I believe that was in hotdogprofitspremium.com.

I found a really awesome hitch sleeve at Harbor Freight that solves this problem. It’s item number 95991.

I have also included a picture of it on my vehicle. We had the hitch put on there yesterday. I’m still way too excited to put it into words. Thanks again buddy!

That is totally cool Scoob! I love that adjustable hitch. With that you won’t have to do the removable front wheel modification.

I definitely need to get me one! Taking the front wheel on and off every time I tow it somewhere isn’t hard but it’s just one more thing to do. Not anymore! 😉

Thanks for the tip!

Hot Dog Cart Radio – Wanda Sells Soups

Soup on a hot dog cart

Hot Dog Cart Radio

It’s Hot Dog Cart Radio Time! Grow your business with this info-packed interview featuring Wanda Swan from Wanda’s Dixie Kitchen!

Wanda started out with one E-Z Built Hot Dog Cart, then progressed to concessions and finally amassed enough money to buy her own restaurant.

A big part of Wanda’s success was the willingness to take on each opportunity that came her way. One of those opportunities was selling… soup! You’ll hear how she does it in this interview.

Another thing that makes Wanda successful is the free custom website that my marketing team built her. She now has the ability to build a customer list and to send coupons to that list every day. This keeps Wanda’s Dixie Kitchen in the front of her customer’s minds and really increases return visits.

She can load up a week’s worth of offers and her website sends them out on the days she specifies – automatically. It’s all done with the built in software that we install in these sites. No computer knowledge is necessary, my “geek team” does it all for you.

If you want one of these free custom websites just let us know and we’ll get started on it.

It’s all in this edition of the Original Hot Dog Cart Radio

Hi Steve, just wanted to send a picture of the cart project. I’m nearly done with my 2nd cart, (new and improved version) I hope you like it. I will send some when its up and running , THANKS A BUNCH. And this one only took me 3 years to build!!

I  had intentions on just building my son one, but that all changed. I fell in love with the whole idea of hotdogs, so this ones for my wife and I. As soon as we can stop the daily grind we will be out dogging!

OK you take care, oh yeah keep those news letters coming and I placed an order for a dog sled. I think I’m gonna like it, based on reviews of it I’ve read.

It’s been lots of fun!! See ya,

Nice job Leldon!
I love the mascot. It looks hand painted, am I right? And you have some fancy-schmancy faucets on that sink! You did a fine job on it – I’m really proud of you and I can’t wait to see more pictures!

Longest Build.
It only took you three years to finish it? I think you win the award for longest build! 😉

Fastest Build.
I have a customer in Indiana who wins the award for fastest build. Dave King ordered the E-Z Built Video and Plans Package then went out and got himself a gig for that weekend – before he even started on his cart! With a hard deadline quickly approaching Dave finished his E-Z Built in just three days!

The great thing is you can work at your own pace and help from me is just a phone call or email away. Whether you work fast or slow, it’s a fun and very profitable project!

Let’s hear it for Leldon in the comments!

Hey Steve,

Hope all is well with you. I wanted to share something that may be helpful to a few of your followers.

My wife went to an auction the other day and saw these freezers that were being sold from a high school closing.

I called the company that made them and parts are still available for them if ever needed.

They sold for $2,800 new…they are about 4 years old.

I use 2 every day on carts to sell ice cream novelties, Italian ice, and frozen candy bars…our sales have increased by 25% since we began with them.

She bought a total of 7 units…I took 2 leaving her with 5 to sell.  She is selling for $500 each plus shipping.  If you know anyone interested, please pass my info along.

Thanks,
Happy Jack
