Long time readers will remember several stories that I posted about “Let’s Be Frank” Hot Dogs. LBF run several carts in and around San Francisco, serving high end grass fed beef hot dogs. The last time I wrote about them they were setting up one of their carts in front of a wine shop during wine tastings.
Well I guess they were pretty successful because Let’s Be Frank is opening a restaurant. Here’s what I found out…

Hot dog: Let’s Be Frank, the cart serving artisan grass-fed beef hot dogs at the Warming Hut at Crissy Field and at AT&T Park on game days, is about to head inside. Next month, if all goes well, Let’s Be Frank will open a bricks-and-mortar retail location at 3318 Steiner St., in the current space of Hahn’s Hibachi.
Escrow is set to close this week and construction set to start next week, says Let’s Be Frank co-founder Larry Bain.
The new Marina location will be open daily, serving five styles of dogs: the hot dog carts iconic grass-fed beef, a spicy Italian, a turkey dog, bratwurst and a vegetarian “not dog.” Also on the menu: grass-fed beef chili, coleslaw, house-made condiments, wine, beer and soda.
“We’re having serious discussion around dessert,” Bain says.
The space will have a counter and a few seats. Plus, all food will be sold in retail packs to take home.

Congratulations to LBF with yet another in a long line of hot dog cart successes stories!

I’ve been thinking of this, because where I am from in Michigan, some local governments do not allow Mobile Food Carts unless they are associated with a brick and mortar food service business. I am sure this is due to pressure from other eatery owners. The attraction of a Hot Dog Cart Business is the low overhead freedom of operation. A way around this is a STFU license or a Special Transitory Food Unit, which means I can work any special events throughout the state. This may include Grand Openings and the like, but I could not return to the same spot day after day. Where theres a will, theres a way.
