I got an email from a young man who wanted me to promise him success in the dog biz.
I referred him to an old article that I wrote on the subject back in January of 2009. It’s really more of a manifesto than an article. I feel VERY strongly about this.
Can I guarantee your success? Are you a “green light person”? Find out by clicking here.

Steve, Great thoughts. Better to attempt working for yourself at something you love than working for someone else. Doing something you love helps quelch some of the self doubts one may have. You will meet more people who will tell you it can’t be done than those who will support you-I know. I stood out in the Chicago winter selling dogs do to the delays of the health dept. And I’ve been noticed by local businesses and the village I live in. I pray that it works. I’m a bit wordy here, sorry. So to all, go get ’em. Mr. Tiki
Go for it! Or as Steve put it, “Just Act!” To translate his manifesto, To get something you never got, you have to do something you never did.
Right on Robin!
Just two words of caution…
Please remember:
1.) This is SALES.
2.) This is a BUSINESS.
Once that’s clear, then it’s ok to “Just Act!” or “Go for it!” or whatever.
If you “CAN SELL”, you WILL succeed, if you are not sure, you still MAY still succeed.
Think about it….what in life, including life itself comes with a guarantee???? Our lives are guaranteed to end, in one way or another…and we insist on living each day. Do it, dont do it. Gotta (as the old saying goes) get off the potty if you arent gonna go. Your contribution to all of our success is that all of these forums and information is so freely available and you are willing to address all of the repeated requests for clarity and info. Security is a mirage! THIS is a no brainer!
Yes, this is a business. But, you still have to take the first step. The first step is the hardest for most people. Mr. Tiki
if you need a guarantee to convince yourself that it will work for you guess what? it won’t.
@Tbone
Right on! Business. Sales. That means licenses, taxes, permits, inspections. As I said in a recent interview with Steve, “DO YOUR HOMEWORK.”
I’ve run into 3 people in the last year that have tried or are trying to run in different towns without state or local licensing or inspections as well as trying to take over on another doggers spot.
No Garuantee. But the hot dog biz is the ride of a lifetime. Steve is absolutely correct.
If you always do what you always done;
You always get what you always got.
Question is this, “Do you like what andwhere you are at ?”
There is no free ride in this business, you have to pay your dues, you will make some mistakes but if you learn by them you have gained some good knowledge, there are a lot of websites available to future businesses take advantage of those and don’t be afraid to ask for help from those that have been doing this for some time. Good luck and remember to keep having fun with it, once the fun is out of it, it is really hard work.
marketing
location
cleanliness
appearance
attitude
customer service
and ask yourself daily how you can be better tomorrow than you were today

All these post says what needs to be said… i agree with all of them.. i love reading old emails… i remembered when you posted that one.. brought meaning to me THEN.. still does the same NOW!!!
Caution is normal, but no matter how prepared you are or aren’t for selling or business – there’s still no denying the truth in Steve’s manifesto. You’re probably guaranteed for some red lights, but how many times have you made it around the block without enduring some?
Stainless steel grill….
Sams club has a stainless steel 2 burner grill with side lock down latche’s on sale for $99.99, its called a spotsman grill. easy bolt on to the side of your dog wagon
I’ve been doing my homework as Robin says for almost a year. This is my favorite quote from Steve!
“That is until your boss (or his boss) gets a wild hair up his ass one fine Monday morning and decides you aren’t necessary anymore. Then you won’t even get what you got yesterday, which in most cases sucked anyway.
This isn’t Rocket Surgery.
Just ACT.”
