Ever heard of “peacocking”? That’s a term borrowed from the dating advice world which refers to the practice of wearing something outrageous to attract attention – and it works in business as well. The first step to making a sale is getting the customer to notice you.
How could you miss this guy? My wife used to wear the full hot dog suit and stand by the roadside waving at cars. And guess what? It worked. The only problem is it gets to be 140 degrees in that costume and she would start to feel dehydrated after about a half hour, but she thought it was fun.
I, on the other hand, would much rather work the cart…
Anyways, back to the hat. Reminds me of a scene from “Caddy Shack”.
Judge Smails walks in and Rodney Dangerfield says, “You buy a hat like this, I’ll bet you get a free bowl of soup. It looks good on you, though.”

LOL!! I want one, also, interested in the hot dog suit. Have a couple of grandchildren that wouldn’t mind wearing one!
My business plan–which I’ve carefully thought about for years now–calls for creating an “old fashioned” theme–not only in the appearance of my cart, but also in my personal appearance. I plan on wearing one of those thin, flat-top straw hats (called a “skimmer” or “Katie”) that they used to wear back in the 1920’s. I’ll also wear a bow tie (to match the band on the hat) and a long white butcher’s apron. I also have a clever name for my business to tie in with the theme, but I’m not prepared to reveal it now as it hasn’t been registered yet!
If people take the time to think about it they can come up with all kinds of cool ideas! Another idea I thought about was to create a nautical theme, wear one of those 18th century tri-corn hats, and call the business, “Hot Dogs of the Caribbean” (and use the same font as the movie for signs). With the latest interest and fad in all things “pirate,” kids (who are big consumers of hot dogs, of course) would get a kick out of it!
Here’s an idea for an “Academy Award” winning business name: HOTDOG MILLIONAIRE!!!
Nice one Rico!
My daughter went trick or treating as a hot dog last year at age 2 and looked so cute it was a really well done costume with a ketchup packet bag for her candy!
