There is a growing trend in the hot dog cart business toward high end organic and vegetarian hot dogs and sausages. Sure, they cost a little more but they command a much higher sales price, as well as setting you apart from the competition.
Two examples that I can think of are Rad Dogs and Let’s be Frank. They are both premium hot dog street vendors that have grown into multiple cart operations with very high profits.
I want to bring you more information on this trend and I can’t think of a better source than Stephen McDonnell.
Stephen founded Applegate Farms in order to provide organic meats to consumers as an alternative to “corporate farm” products. His hot dogs are antibiotic, pesticide, and hormone free.
I think they would be perfect for the premium segment of the market, with the added benefit of giving your cart a strong branding message.
It would be a extremely easy to get your home town newspaper to do an article about your hot dog cart business if you pitch them an angle like this:
“We serve antibiotic, pesticide, and hormone free hot dogs – we are a healthy, organic alternative!”
Free advertising anyone?
Do you want to hear an interview with Stephen? Well I want to do one, so…

Wow! I’m in the starting stages of having a cart but the organic alternative was high on my list of offerings from the get go, what timing!
I’ve tried some of the dogs today and they were real good considering they only have half the fat as Nathan’s and Sabretts. My favorite so far is the Big apple dog, if you sell sabretts this will be a great substitute.
