Can you donate a used hot dog cart to charity?

Hi Steve,

I dont know if you ever get any of these requests, but I wanted to ask anyway. I am a member of the PV ELks in Totowa, NJ and we are a charitable organization which raises money for Special Needs Children and Homeless Veterans.

We dont have much money to buy things and trying to buy things is very difficult. So with this in mind, would you know anyone who may be willing to donate a used cart to charity in the NY NJ area. We would be willing to give them a donation letter for tax purposes.

We are looking for one so we can sell hot dogs at our events. The problem is we do so much at other locations, setting up is a nightmare. We have to bring table chairs and everything else that goes with a fly by night setup. I know its a lot to ask, but as I said, it does not hurt to ask.

The Elks organization has donated over 5 Billion to charities and its our 150th year as an organization. With all this money going out, there is not a lot to keep and maintain lodges. This is why we ask for the donation.

Any help you can give me would be great.

Thank you

How about it Slinger?

Do you have a used cart that you’d like to donate? This is a great deal. You can often write off more on your taxes for donating the cart than you could get by selling it.

If you want to help the special need kids and vets, call George at 862-485-0348 and talk to him about donating that cart that’s taking up space in your garage or shed.

How Long Can Hot Dogs Sit in Water?

One of the fastest ways to go out of business is to serve a tasteless, mushy excuse for a hot dog at your cart. In today’s lesson, let’s find out how to avoid that.

Cody writes…

Hey Steve my biggest question that I can’t find any where is. How long can the hot dogs sit in water before the taste of the dog chances? What do you recommending how long to keep them in before they become waste?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You Must Experiment. Different brands of hot dogs have widely varying holding times, especially in water. Do a taste test yourself at home. You don’t even need a cart to do this. Here’s how…

Put six dogs in hot water and taste one every ten minutes. You will find out how long your particular hot dogs can hold up.

Don’t ever leave hot dogs in boiling water. You’ll turn them into mush. Your hot holding water should be somewhere around 160 degrees.

Here’s a Neat Little Trick. I get my dogs up to temperature fast in boiling water, then immediately transfer them to my steamer where they will last a loooong time without going mushy or losing their flavor.

Hot dog cart setup critique. What’s wrong here?

I just got a request to critique a hot dog cart setup at a brewery in Arizona. Mary isn’t selling as much as she would like, and she asked for my help. Here’s what I came up with. Your thoughts are welcome too!

Hi Steve,

I bought a 5×8 trailer and took my cart 240 miles up to northern Arizona. The trailer was essential due to the bumpy and long roads.

Unfortunately, I’ve only had limited success. The monsoon season came in which was good/bad, as it cooled the temps but tends to keep people away.

I’m selling Angus beef hot dogs ($3), pork brats ($4) and nachos ($2). I sold slightly more brats than dogs. Sold almost no nachos.

What am I doing wrong?

As always, your ideas are sincerely appreciated!

Mary

Hi Mary,

I like your cart and the way you have your table set up.

The first thing that stood out to me was your lack of visibility. Your cart kind of blends in with the surroundings instead of standing out. I would put a brightly colored 8 foot banner saying HOT DOGS – COLD DRINKS right in front of your cart. Above it on poles would be even better.

My next question is about foot traffic patterns. Is your cart situated directly in the walking pattern or do people have to go out of their way to get to you? This makes a BIG difference.

I’m also confident that the sign with the words “Nutritious” and “Healthy” is hurting sales. When I read it the first thing that popped into my head was, “Healthy, nutritious hot dogs? Hmmm, they probably don’t taste as good as regular hot dogs. I’ll pass.”

Consider the type of person you are selling to. You are set up at a brewery. Those folks are there to indulge in something tasty and a bit decadent. They don’t want health food. I’d lose that sign.

Overall, your set up looks clean and inviting. Good job on that Mary.
